It is the process of utilizing computers, programmed to follow a defined set of instructions for placing trades, with the goal of generating profits at a speed and frequency which we humans are simply incapable of matching. The defined set of rules are based on timing, price, quantity, and/or any mathematical model. Apart from the obvious profit potential, algo-trading makes markets more liquid and eliminates the outside, unseen forces of emotion and human error.
